OMGoodness!! Just have to share this with you... Re Fire Safety Assessment: I've just had 3 lovely, big firemen turn up in uniform with their fire engine outside my house to come in and do the assessment. I was flustered to say the least, "Does it really need so many of you?" said I. "Well, we are on call so could get called out on a job at any moment." said one of them reasonably. Well, anyway, once I'd got over the fact that I was makeup less and wearing the most awful jogging suit bottoms and T shirt, they went through the assessment and DH and I will have some additional little jobs to do re CO detectors etc. Anyway, made my day.... :-)

Ha ha - This made me remember when I was living in a house of 4 flats...the ground floor neighbour's alarm sounded (which I didn't hear), soon after my doorbell went so I jumped out of the bath (it was the morning). There was no-one else in the building so I opened the front door in my towel to about six firemen. They were very smiley and extremely amused at my total embarrassment. If I end up adopting again I shall be sure to be in for this new Fire Safety Assessment thingy, sounds good!

Oh wow - what a perk of adoption - not heard of that one before scaredycats. Are you sure you didn't start a fire deliberately? Reminds me of a friend of mine who lives in New York, she is married to a fireman and she was making breakfast one morning for herself and put some toast in the toaster, but forgot and went and had a shower and the smoke from the toaster went out the kitchen window of her apartment into the central light well. A neighbour alerted the fire department and my friend had firemen hammering on her door. She too, had to leap out of the shower, wrap a towel around her and run to open the door before they hammered it down, but what made it worse for her was she knew one of the firemen, a colleague of her husband, and boy did he make fun of her, (being the wife of a fireman), she should have known better. Great fun was had back at the fire station and she has never been allowed to live it down since.

Wow! We never got this....so not fair! Love your story JMK, reminded me of a uni friend who'd just got new hall carpet in her flat. Went off to have a shower and carpet expanded and she couldn't open bathroom door.... Fortunately had her mobile in bathroom and so had to call fire brigade to come and break down two doors and rescue her....( all while wearing a towel...)!!

As far as I know anyone can book the firemen to come and do an assessment - I've had two!! (Can never be too careful...) Theyll also give you free smoke alarms (and fit them) if yours are old.
Our local station sometimes sends one of their fire engines round on a tour if they're not busy and they let kids go inside to have a look. Lots of mums seem to think their children need supervising on this visit too.....

NMT - I had a 'tour' of a fire engine......I was dating a fireman at the time My SW in fact told me that you can get fire officers round to do the home safety check to guide you on the best place of escape in the event of a fire, etc: I reminded her of the background info I'd given her (having dated 2 firemen in fact): could have been a bit weird if one of them ended up doing the assessment !!

Wow scaredycats very very envious.... most know of my penchant for men in good boots.... Would have loved this experience.... Not the 'towel ' incidents many have shared tho??? Eeekkkk
Great idea tho the boys would love a tour of a fire engine.... Worth some thought....

What a lovely surprise for you Scaredy cats I have visited our local fire station 3 times now with Bert's Beaver troop and after they had shown us their equipment we all got a chance to play with a massive hose and got very wet My friend has been taking the assessment to become a reserved fire fighter, it's really tough but they have been very supportive and she gets to hang out at their gym, big sigh.......

Even Bert's Beaver troop is a bit suspect.

We did beaver scouts to get child care experiance before we adopted. The trip to the firestation was the only trip we had no problem getting mums to come along and help out ;-)
