Hi I am confused on this. I've always believed & read these links and think the follow .... If a child is under 135cm or under 12 they should be in the back If a child needs a booster seat to achieve 135cm they should be in the back as it's the child's height that is measured Front air bags - once child is 135cm no mention on wether you should turn it on or off for children over 135cm - are the deemed adults at this point ? http://www.childcar*eats.org.uk/law/ http://www.childcar*eats.org.uk/choosing/airbags.htm www.gov.uk/child-car-seats-the-rulesthink.direct.gov.uk/education/early-years-and-primary/parents/7-to-11s/car-seats-boosters-and-seat-belts/Totally confused. I have 4 kids to transport all over 135cm & I'm not sure I can take them all as 1 will need to be in the front. Help please - being dense

Checked this recently! Ds now 134 cms at age 7!
No car seat needed over 135 cms.
Front seat allowed too as long as all seat belts used.
No idea on airbag!

Cowgirl, if they are 135cm or taller then they can use any seat with a normal seat belt (except the drivers seat obviously!!!). The airbag should be on. The only time you need to deactivate the airbag is when using a rear facing car seat in the front.

Thanks for this
The bit I have my knickers in the twist is the bit about using a booster seat in the front.
Some friends turn off the air bag but I maintain if the child is not 135cm they should be in the back. No booster seat in the front basically.

I am no expert but I understood that a booster could be used in the front only if the airbags were turned off.....
Havn't had too much worry coz baa hasn't needed one in an absolute age!!
Hope hope you can sort your seating arrangements out.....

I've used a booster seat in the front. Sometimes there's just no alternative - and it's safer than leaving one child on the pavement! My car will only fit two car seats in the back - as will a lot of cars now car seats are so big.

I use a car seat for Starlet in the front of my car and have since she arrived. She has the type that are basically a booster seat but with a full back - it uses the normal adult seat belt. I prefer having her in the front from an attachment point of view - she likes being able to see me and talk to me, especially on longer journies. The airbag is a difficult one - I was given to understand the insurance can be invalidated if you switch the airbag off, so have compromised and pushed her seat right back.

incarsafetycentre.co.ukHi I called this company. They told me that they get queries on this all the time especially from separated couples. They told me to check the car handbook. She mentioned that her Astra said 12 years old with no mention of height. In an emergency if the seat is pushed right back if the air bag can not be turned off that the best they can advised. However If the child needs a booster seat to obtain a height of 135cm then they should be in the rear of the car. I think I've repeated what they told me last week correctly.

Any child can go in the front seat of a car. It is recommended that in the event of using a rear facing baby seat, then the air bag should be turned off it it can.
All children under 135cm bust have an "appropriate" booster seat for them.
I think we get hung up too much on things, some common sense is needed. If you are on your own, with a child on their own, I think the front seat is probably safest as you can interact with them safely. If the seat is fairly well back, then the air bag will do what it is meant to, to cushion any impact. I get the rear facing child seat thing.
In my car, my girls have ISOfix booster seats, just because my car has ISOfix, so why not use it? As for airbags, my car has rear airbags in the back of the front seats, side air bags down both sides front and rear, and a rear air bag, comes out of the back/top of the rear seat to protect from rear impacts.
My girls always go in the back of the car, but if I am taking one of them out on their own, then I put them in the front. They enjoy it, I think its safer, or no different to being in the back.

Thanks for that mrvlm :-) I feel reassured by that. I like having Starlet in the front and she feels safer (attachment wise), particularly as she always sat in the back of social workers cars so she hates it. I have noticed, especially early mornings when I am about to leave her for the day, she often gently puts her hand on mine as I change gears, or on my elbow when we're at a junction. It's like she just needs those moments of physical contact. For me that outweighs any risks.
