The Rudd Centre
This is a new Research Centre, due to become fully active in October 2013. The School of Psychology is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Harold as Founding Director for the centre. Please see Press Release for further details. Children and young people who have experienced adoption are a diverse group, and there are still many important gaps in our understanding of how their well-being is influenced by their early experiences and by the adoption process itself. The Rudd Centre is being established in order to advance our understanding of the experiences leading up to and following adoption, with attention to the multiple social contexts that adopted children and young people experience -- at home, at school, in the public care system, and beyond. The Rudd Centre will aim to develop new insights into the cultural, social-relational, cognitive, and emotional processes that play a role in the development of adopted children and young people. It will draw on recent advances in developmental neuroscience and psychology in order to inform our knowledge of how separation, institutionalization, maltreatment and other trauma influence children’s development. A key focus of the Rudd Centre will be on the translation of cutting edge research into effective policy and practice to support the wellbeing of adopted children and their families.
